Soul! (Dir. Pete Docter, Kemp Powers, Pixar, 2020)

Jamie Foxx stars as middle school band teacher Joe Gardner, who on the day of his big break, meets a fateful end. One day when Gardner is teaching his middle school band class, he is promoted to full time much to his dismay. He beomes a mentor soul 22, (Tina Fey) in order to help her find her "spark", which gives her life. In turn, this helps him discover his purpose in life and to be able to help others do the same. This Great Before, prepares unborn souls for life on Earth. During his time with 22, he seeks to reunite his soul with his body after accidentally being separated during a fall. He encounters a group of lost souls who attempt to help him get back into his body through meditation. Gardner manages to make it back to Earth, but he ends up in a cat's body and 22 is in his. Throughout the rest of the movie, 22 and Gardner embark on a humorous adventure for him to return to his body, with him learning the true meaning of life along the way. In regards to how I felt about the film, I understood the premise of the film, but I didn't like how Gardner was basically in a cat's body the whole film, which reminded me of The Princess and the Frog. Despite this, the film primarily focused on Gardner and his pursuit of jazz and reuniting with his body. The film possessed a dual protaganist, Gardner and the cat, where both parties switched bodies. Gardner's mother (Phyllica Rashad), is weary of him pursuing his dreams of becoming a famous musisician, as she does not see it as practical. Gardner and 22 help each other find their "spark", which is for them "when they're ready to come live". 22 eventually wanted to stay on Earth in Gardner's body, as she finds her spark in his life. Gardner eventually gets back into his own body and completes the gig with Dorothea Williams, coming to realize that music may not have been his true passion afterwards. I believe his love was music but the spark was that he needed to live life and not just exist. I enjoyed this film and I would personally rate it a 8/10
